The 10 Commandments for Daily Living

Welcome to a 10-week study of the most life-giving words ever spoken by God to us.  Generations of people the world over, in a multitude of circumstances, have experienced the creative and sustaining power of these words by making the 10 Commandments central to their study of the faith and by putting them into regular practice.  It has long been recognized that observance of the 10 Commandments forms a strong moral foundation and provides a true compass for good decision making.  For that reason, it is important that we teach these "10 Words to Live By" to our children.  I am glad that you have decided to join me in this study and I pray that we may all be renewed and strengthened in our commitment to an ever greater love of God and neighbor by accepting the challenge of living out each of the 10 Commandments.

For Group Study
This study has been designed to benefit fellowship and study groups.  The study portion of the gathering should last no more than an hour.  The 10 Discussion Questions that follow at the end of each chapter are written to encourage Inductive Bible Study.  It is expected that participants will read each chapter prior to arriving.  The role of the group leader or host is to ask the questions and to keep the discussion moving and on target.  The leader should choose a few of the Discussion Questions ahead of time for all of the participants to answer and should leave time at the end of the week's study for participants to discuss a question or two that the leader may have skipped over.  Participants should always have the option of remaining silent and "passing" on a particular question, but the leader should encourage participation from those who are naturally reticent about speaking in a group.  These are questions that require some reflection to answer, so allow time for silence and thinking before discussion begins on each question.  If the group seems stuck on the wording of a particular question, the leader should feel free to rephrase the question.  (A place for comment is provided for each chapter on this web site and I welcome and encourage group leaders to leave feedback about the questions there.)  If a question comes up that is confusing or that you do not know how to answer, just say "I don't know!"  Groups are encouraged to begin their study with prayer and by asking a volunteer to read aloud the Bible passages that are assigned to be read with the Discussion Questions for the week.  Honor one another by sticking to the schedule and ending at the agreed upon time, even if it seems that the discussion isn't over.  There will be more time for discussion after the study is over, when you are enjoying fellowship or even when you gather again next week.
